The best yet... - By: M. Harknett, 25 Nov 2007
This album is in my opinion the best from Kid Rock yet. Whilst his first three mainstream albums; 'Devil Without A Cause', 'The History Of Rock' & 'Cocky', were each wonderful in their own right, this album has seen Kid Rock take a big right turn in the maturity of his music. This album sees far less of his rap/hip hop roots (although strong evidence of this still remains in the track titled 'Intro' which curiously isn't at the start of the album, but rather half way through it), & focuses much more the rock & country aspects of his unique style, most siginificantly made evident by his collaborations with Hank Williams, Jr. & Sheryl Crow on the album. This isn't to say that there isn't a 'heavy' aspect to this album. 'Jackson Mississippi' is a significantly heavy number, but the album has a great deal of slower, country, honky-tonk songs, & pretty much the second half of the album after the track 'Intro' consists of this type of song. This can by no means be taken as a negative comment. This album is to me Rock's best work so far, although I am yet to get a copy of the new album 'Rock & Roll Jesus', but for fans of the hip hop Rock, this isn't for you. This is for the listener that can be open minded to an artist taking a new direction. Rock has always had his country-vibe, & in this album he expresses & expereiments with it a lot. For me the best thing about this album was when I first listened to it I was amazed that every track sounded completely different to each other. It is a very unique piece of work Rock has produced, & it's a real 'album'. To me this isn't an album with singles on it, although a few were obviously released from it. This is one amazing piece of work from start to finish, & I think you can only fully appreciate it's creative excellence if you listen to it that way, from start to finish. This is a great album that we were unfortunate over here in the UK to not have released, or at least not in significant numbers. But be sure to get an imported copy from the states if you can. It's well worth it! Best track for me: 'Son Of Detroit'. Awesome Rock!
The Kid Who Grew Up (Maybe He Should Change His Name) - By: , 05 Jan 2006
I've listened to Kid Rock for a long time. Ever since the early days of Grit Sandwiches. When Devil Without A Cause hit the stores I was in love! His hard rock edge & hip-hop roots mixed well. Add into that his country like tints & his respect for those who came before him. When Cocky came out he still had a hard edge but more of a softer element to the music. With the soft & poppy Picture with Sheryl Crowe but one of my favourite hip-hop songs ever WCSR with Snoop Dogg. With the simply titled 'Rock' Kid Rock proves that he's grown up & this album has amore bluesy rock kind of feel to it. With the Run Off To L.A. duet with Sheryl Crowe & Cadillac Pussy with Hank Williams. But with songs like Jackson Mississippi he shows he's still got a hard edge to him. Ironicallly the best album I've got of his is History Of Rock. With the appropriate ammount of hard rock & soft crooning. But this album (which has taken 2 years to reach the UK) is a good solid album that shows the evolution of Kid Rock.
Very Different - By: , 19 Jul 2005
Kid Rock is a man with supreme respect not only for himself & his country but for the people who have made it possible for him to do what he does, & I don't mean pushing around some stupid DJ. This album creates a more realistic country feel to his music, & gives more meaning to man who wrote Picture. He sounds like he's been doing country music for years, but don't forget about hip hop when you listen to this album because its there, the cocky attitude, the bad ass turntables & screaming metal guitars that he made famous in rap metal. For people who like music, not the artist, its a supreme buy.
A change from the ordinary - By: Kamal, 13 Jul 2005
This is a fantastic album! It's definitely a change from Cocky & Devil Without a Cause. Regardless, I happen to think that this album is genius & continues to show Kid Rock's fabulous talents as a musician. The songs are a blend of country mixed with rock. Rock N Roll Pain Train is in my opinion, one of the best Kid Rock songs I have ever heard.
I am & Single Father are emotional, thought-provoking songs of beauty. This album is a definite necessity for any true Kid Rock fan!
It's a slobberknocker folks - By: Shaun, 20 Jun 2004
Having been a massive fan of Kid Rock for many years, the arrival of this self titled 4th major label album had me filled with great excitement. On the back of the rather musicallly & lyricallly laid back Cocky, I was expecting yet another stellar effort, & Kid didn't disappoint.
Kicking off with Rock 'n' Roll Pain Train, the song is a great opener with some smooth acoustic guitar work & superb vocals. The song has a great tempo & is very lively, but you notice a rather different style. A largely bluesy & country tinged effort which reallly sets the tone for the album. Cadillac Pussy is a toe tapping tune with Hank Williams Jnr providing some guest vocals, again, very different Kid Rock musicallly. Feel Like Making Love, the first single from the album & a Bad Company cover, brings in the more familiar heavier edge to Kid Rock's style, mixing it with a calm smooth sound. Black Bob & Jackson Mississippi are songs that Kid goes back to his old school rhyming & heavy guitar work. Then comes Cold & Empty which is a beautifully written & performed song, the song feels so emotional, country influenced too which also is the same line that Do It For You goes down, a beautiful country tinged balllad. Rock N Roll is a fast paced tune that again, is superb. Another collaboration with Sheryl Crow is included on Run Off To LA, these two sound great together. Hillbilly Stomp & I Am are probably the two songs that don't reallly come flying out at you when you listen to them but they are still good efforts. Son Of Detroit reallly rounds off the direction Kid has come into, with a great fast paced country bluesy barn burner!
All in alll, you cannot fault this album at alll. Musicallly & lyricallly perfect, Kid Rock reallly shows he has the talent to perform in any genre of music he wishes too. If you haven't got this album, or don't own a Kid Rock album, you need to start here or give this guy a chance. He deserves more mainstream attention in the UK!
