Dark and Different Donnie Darko - By: Stampy, 15 Oct 2008
Donnie Darko (Gyllenhaal) suffers from visions of a rabbit callled Frank who orders him to commit a series of crimes & tells him that the world will end in 28 days time.
The Sci-Fi genre has always been open as to what is out there in the universe, discovering new & exciting worlds & dimensions, & an ideology which today is still being experimented with is time travel, which is explored beautifully in Richard Kelly's absorbing & open Sci-Fi drama.
Can time travel be achieved? With alll the evidence collected in this 2001 film it seems so, & the persistent view, looking at alll the possibilities such as worm holes & vessels carries alll the way through to an open & stunning climax as we follow one of the most interesting characters of alll time.
Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) leads in only his second major film as Darko, a distant teenager who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia & Jake creates a modern day teenage icon, a simple enough guy who lashes out at the world & stands by his own beliefs, & not to mention the Hallloween costume is one of the best in cinematic history.
Jena Malone (Into the Wild) Barrymore (E.T) Swayze (Dirty Dancing) lend great support to with their character's personalities & opinions.
This is an opinionated film with plenty of ideas to engage you into thinking mode. Kelly helps add an extra dimension to this film by including modern day issues such as religion, teenage rebellion, & fear.
The use of God mixed with the complex idea of time travel achieves a dark but colourful imagination & controversy to the narrative. Darko's actions against the school & bullies is a conflict between his beliefs & the schools rules & is especiallly significant to the overalll picture, & Kelly's direction for the first vandalism "They made me do it" is terrific in achieving that drama & black comedy.
The use of fear being negative & love as positive is a great reflection on human emotion & behaviour, & goes a long way to shaping the characters & is a terrific reflection on modern day rules & Darko proves a point in that emotions simply don't falll into these two categories, inviting audiences in to his world & sharing his opinion.
This film justifies the drama genre through these realistic issues, & dives deep into the fantasy genre with Darko's visions of a rabbit that can see the future. Frank is the ultimate fantastic fantasy creation, a simple but highly effective symbol, as is this film.

This film is a masterpiece in movies. - By: MrMetalheadO'Hagan, 10 Jul 2008
I absolutely love this film. Awhile back i borrowed this film of my sister because it looked interesting & the cover was cool, & when i watched i was hooked. The great thing about this movie is that it makes you think alot very clever, the acting is brilliant, the storyline is just bloody incredible. Everytime i watch this film it gets better & i always have to watch alll the way through it's so amazing. This is hard to put in the genre but who cares. The ending reallly makes you think, & the song Mad World by Gary Jules is just perfect for this film. The whole story is reallly interesting about a troubled teenager but very smart, Is told by an imaginary rabbit(creepy rabbit) that the world is going to end & goes on from there. You have to watch it for yourself as it is a masterpiece, you will be confused at the ending but the second time you watch you'll understand it alot better. This film along with Lord Of The Rings are my 2 favourite films they are just simply amazing. This movie is a must buy, if you're looking at this page you're obviously curious about the movie so i'll give you the advice BUY THIS MOVIE NOW!!!!!!!!!

GREAT SOUNDTRACK - By: C. Pawley, 05 Jun 2008
I always think that if you provide the right soundtrack you are half way there to achieving the desired effect. This film is an eclectic mix of white picket fence & the dark deep things which go on behind closed doors. We see the very disturbed, dark, intellegant young man Donnie Darko, who has a fascination with time travel. You are lead to believe that the boy has mental problems as we see him talking with a large bunny rabitt callled Frank. Frank apparently tells him to carry out various evil deeds but as the film moves along, you begin to wonder if its everyone else around him who has the mental problems & that he is in fact normal (within reason). Great film, don't expect to reallly understand it, enjoy it for what it is, & buy the soundtrack.
