Troy - By: Kingleon, 07 Dec 2007
This film could have been a classic but sadly is let down by the acting. Its worth watching but I would recommend 300 instead as the characters & acting is better & overalll a stronger film.
I lived in the time of Achilles - By: B. Chandler, 18 Jun 2007
This film pretty much follows the story with very few exceptions & possible ending. However the few exceptions & ending is what makes this story work as a movie instead of a long poem. Stories being told may ways five different insights & there should be no conflict between the reader & viewer & both stories are real to the observer.
For you that forgot the story & you that know the story well but have not seen this movie basicallly we are looking at a story that you may or may not have had an opportunity to sidestep in school but can never have a grasp on social history with out it. Some calll it real & lost in antiquity. Others say that homer had a Good imagination. And others treat it as an alllegory with a historical background.
Brad Pitt who has played fickle people before is excellent in the part of Achilles & is sort of a heel. Nothing less was expected. It was the other actors that played their parts so well that you forgot you were watching the movie.

Two Trojan princes are the guests of the Spartan ruler Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson). While Menelaus is preoccupied with other matters he leaves his wife, Helen of Sparta (Diane Kruger), to her own devises. The younger Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) is left alone to many times with Helen & decides against everyone else's better judgment to make her Helen of Troy & thus pilfers her from Menelaus.
As a husband Menelaus is of course miffed. However his brother the Greek king Agamemnon (Brian Cox) sees this as an opportunity to absorb Troy into his territory. Natural this spawns a war in which Agamemnon recruits Achilles an extremely gifted & charmed warrior. Achilles goes to make a name for him self. He brings his cronies, & his cousin. Together they do many bold & calllous things.
I will not go into the details of the war as you either know or will soon know the details. However I will say that I thought that the Trojan horse was well & realisticallly designed. And you may want to pay attention to the background music as it is relevant to the fi
Should have been much better - By: Mr. G. Saccomanno, 03 Mar 2007
The hard work has been done by Homer & Quintus Smyrneus, i.e. the story has been written. Some of the casting was inspired: P O'Toole as Priam, Eric Bana as Hector, Orlando Bloom as Paris & Brian Cox as Agamemnon. The rest was terrible. Had this been made by a David Lean or even Mel Gibson the outcome would have been far better. You have to be someone in love with the story to truly get the best out of it. This production smacks of a film studio following a formula to get the most profit (Brad Pitt shouldn't have been anywhere near this). Had someone like Peter Jackson been directing, then I'm sure the outcome would have been a lot closer to the author's original vision.
Hollywood Homer - By: Mark Liversedge, 02 Mar 2007
The film is good blockbusting fun. The battle scenes have the intimacy you get from The Iliad. Sadly the plot is vaguely related to the original but then who cares? Its not billed as 'The Iliad' is it? Those pesky Gods don't do much meddlin' in the film & the whole thing plays out more like a drama than a Peter Jackson lovingly realised delivery of the original. More Mission Impossible than Passage to India. Just watch it & enjoy, let the literary rivet-counters boo from their lecture theatres & eat some popcorn.
Looks sumptuous in HDDVD.
Not very good at all - By: Elizabeth Green, 08 Feb 2007
I was not impressed with this film at alll, I do not think that any of the actors in this film were any good at alll; they looked as if they were reading it from a script alll the way through.
Brad Pitt played Achilles, the immortal warrior, it seemed that Brad Pitt was relying too much on his physical appearance to get his character across to the audience, & did anyone notice the slightly watered down American accent?.
Orlando Bloom & Diane Kruger were the lovers in this so callled 'epic' film.
Orlando portrayed his character as the prince of Troy to be utterly pathetic & actuallly, a coward.
Diane Kruger played the victimsed Helen of Troy where she was so unhappy with her marriage & everyone had to feel sorry for her...I think her acting was poor & they could have found someone stronger to play her.
This film relies too much on visual & special effects, & big battle scenes, & looking pretty alll the time. Disappointed!
