Great game - By: Mr. A. Pye, 01 Oct 2008
Well Im Actuallly an RPG fan but I bought this game to see what it was like. I have played previous MGS's & enjoyed them very much, I thought it might not be as good as them but I was so wrong, I have not completed this game yet but already I think it is seriously the best game on ps3 yet. The gameplay is fast & exciting Im glued to my TV, the cut-scenes go very well with the game & the effects are outstanding & so detailed, the cut-scenes are long but brilliant why would you not want to watch them? It has references from earlier games that help the story along like flashbacks & old characters are in this game. The boss battles are also reallly exciting just like the older MGS's. All in alll this is the game to buy for alll PS3 Owners.
The short answer - By: Mr. D. W. Avenell, 26 Sep 2008
IF YOU'RE A METAL GEAR FAN:

This game is so good it wil make you cry. Up there with Zelda Ocarina of Time for title of best game ever in my opinion.

IF YOU'RE A NEWCOMER:

Why are you a newcomer? Go play alll the games in order now!!!

IF YOU DON'T LIKE METAL GEAR:

Sorry but you will be disappointed by the length / amounts of cut scenes, this game has a lot of em! BUT - you can skip em & play the game, which is still excellent by any standards.

The story is there for the fans - & asceneds the game from excellent to one of the alll time best games ever.
Simply the best in the series and the best game on PS3 - By: Gov160, 25 Sep 2008
Being a huge Metal Gear fan i had very high expectations for this game & i was not disappointed it was better than i was expecting it to be it even had me wanting to play it again the moment i finished it.

The gameplay has been hugely improved since MGS3 mainly the controls, they actuallly work flawlessly & provide a huge degree of style when playing it, you can shoot or sneak your way around or do both, the gameplay has been designed to be adjustable to any players style. You also get a huge supply of weapons to choose from (though you can only hold a few at one time) & nearly alll of them can be upgraded & customised with laser attachments, extra stock, grenade launchers etc

The visuals & sound are second to none you get ultra sharp very well detailed character models that are almost at CGI level & the environments are also amazingly well detailed, they are full of extra graphic effects & sounds that makes it very life like. The soundtrack is minimalist to add for effect but in the cutscenes that use the soundtrack it has been done to match the mood of the scene or gameplay perfectly.

The very heart of this game is its story, some people would not like it because the game has at least 5 hours of cutscenes but out of alll the MGS games the cutscenes in this one are spectacular. The cutscenes are full of excellent voice acting, motion capture & brilliant camera angles that make these cutscenes look like a vigh high budget movie. I didn't look at the clock once when i was watching them even though the longest cutscene can clock up to about 45 minutes at the very end but it has so many twists that if you get caught up in the story it will suprise you. However you can pause or skip them but you are missing a huge part of the game.

The story itself is heavy handed but full of depth & is detailed enough to be its own movie, the presentation alone shows it. The cutscenes has many humorous moments although sometimes it does try a little too hard too be funny but it can be forgiven. It also has many action moments like two chase scenes (both are mixed with gameplay) & a spectacular bare knuckle fist fight, plus many battle scenes between PMC's. You also can get many sad & even a few romantic moments too that grow between a few of the charcters, This gives the game a huge amount of depth & the gameplay merges with the cutscenes brilliantly making it feel dynamic. The overalll backbone of the story however is about how technology has gone to far, theres more to it but i won't spoil it.

Overalll I thoroughly enjoyed this game & it is by far one of the best i've ever played, but this game will equire a decent level of inteligance to understand so you will be expected to think whe playing it & although you can skip the cutscenes you will feel dissapointed in the game for skiping them
good first run, but gets boring afterwards - By: Mr. S. J. Reid, 24 Sep 2008
when i first heard about this game i went insane with joy to find that this epic series was coming to a close & alll my questions would be answered.

i pre orded this a month in advance to the release date, you cant pre order something as soon as you hear about it because the date might change.

when i got the game i finished college so i was able to spend every day making my way through this. it took me on my first run about 3-4 days to finish it.

throughout completing this game i had a lot of fun & that was mainly down to the amount of weaponry you could have & sanke's ability to have endless pockets.

i did like how you didnt have to sneak around almost every act as i wanted to have a more guns blazing approach to most MGS games.

gameplay wise its great most of the mechanics from MGS3 & 2 are there with the one added ability to shoot whilst laying down on your back.

alll the cut scenes were great but way too long.

after i had completed the game in which it took me 6 & a half hours because of the cut scenes, i went back to do the harder difficulties & still had fun.

im sure that the online play is fantastic but i havent gone there yet & probably wont.

there isnt much to say about the graphics because that has already been aid by everyone else, they are amazing.

alll in alll its great for the first few times you play through & when you skip alll the cut scenes you can complete it in 3 & a half hours.
Very involved MGS4 is a big awesome game.... - By: gamey1975, 18 Sep 2008
Well, after owning this game for several months I have come full circle in my opinion of it. First impressions were fantastic, however after a week or two I found the game play almost too involved & difficult to get the most out of the game. Fiddly, complicated & too many weapons to pick from. Cut sequences are long but excellent. Controls are great with a "weapon shop" available within the pause menu. Great styling & great graphics. The frame rate can become impaired in "busy" parts of the game. However I have come full circle & keep getting impressed with this game, it just keeps blowing me away. Once you get used to its intense involvement & finding the correct style to play it, it becomes the most rewarding game I have ever played. Need to slow yourself down in this game (you learn how to go guns blazing early in game, which is handy as a backup) & not run around like a headless chicken...once you have learned the environment & got an idea of whats going on you can get a "feel" of whats required, like stealth or assault tactics. It can also help to have good levels of concentration, snake smokes tobacco, & I undersatand where he is coming from (despite me not being a smoker no longer). This games feel comes in time & enables the player to get something that you can never get from any other game, a feeling of realism. Not realism as in reality but a realism within the game, & understanding of whats going on & whats required. I can only explain it by saying it must be what virtual reality feels like, total control of your environment. Go along for the ride & dont run around like a headless chicken, master the controls & the environment & be a real gamer....
